Over the recent weeks I have been working on a new spiritually based training. There is still much work to do on this and it may, of course, never see the light of day. This is what the creative process is like sometimes. Not everything you work on will come to fruition. It is the act of working on the project, not the outcome from it, which is the purpose. One of the key tenets of this spiritual way of looking at the world, and something I have shared before, is that what you put out is what you get back, somewhere, somehow, somewhen. Our experience of physical reality is a mirror. Because we live in a space-time reality what we get back doesn’t necessarily show up straight away, there is a time delay. And, most likely, it doesn’t show up in a one-for-one manner either. Now this isn’t about reward, or punishment, or karma. There is no judgement in what you get back, it is just a mirror. Very simply, from this understanding, physical reality reflects back to you your beliefs, emotions, thoughts, and behaviours. By doing so we get the chance to see who we are. It supports us 100% in either being negative, positive, or balanced in between. But because of the time delay we usually don’t make the connections between what we think, feel, or do, with what we see on the outside. However, if you live a more observed life then you will begin to see it.

As I write this on the 6th November it looks quite clear that the USA has voted to have Donald Trump as its 47th President. This election felt like the most consequential for years. There was a clear choice in terms of the two candidates’ character and policies. Trump seems to me to be a divisive person, fired by the fragility of his own ego. Whilst Harris seemed more connective and conciliatory, and offered the US another chance to elect its first female President. Americans seem to have opted for someone who they think will make their economy better, and who can get a lid on immigration. Americans seem to think that Trump is a strong leader, and that in a world which is on the edge of widespread violent conflict, that is a good thing. Personally, I don’t see strength in Donald Trump, I see weakness. I see an ego so fragile that it cannot cope with any form of criticism, and that is a serious problem. But I am not blessed with the gift of foresight, and my views about the present may not be correct either. But my sense is that electing Donald Trump will have a significant destabilising effect on the USA and the broader world.

What the work on the spiritual training has also taught me is that what we call good and bad are both energies that existence is made of. What we call good energy connects, integrates, and expands. What we call bad energy subdivides, separates, and disconnects. But it’s the same energy, just filtered in a different way. You don’t get light without darkness, or darkness without light. And it is possible to use negative energy in a positive way too. More than that there is a balance point between the two, a calm neutral spot where you get to choose what you prefer. Do not invalidate anything which shows up in your life that appears to be negative, because it is still part of existence, view it from the balanced centre.

As the months and years ahead unfold, we will see what the consequences of this choice will mean for the USA and the world. Will it be peace and prosperity after all, or will uncertainty and chaos descend. No matter what happens we still get to choose how events affect us personally. That may not always seem apparent, but no matter what happens in your life, if you choose to greet it with calm assurance, then that is what will be reflected back to you, eventually.

“We cannot change anything until we accept it. Condemnation does not liberate, it oppresses.” Carl Jung

I recently read 30 Lessons for Living by Karl Pillemer. He is an American sociologist and gerontologist. In the 2000s he conducted in depth interviews with 1,800 older Americans. As the title of his book suggests he gleaned a lot of advice from these life experts....
