NLP Therapy – OCD

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

OCD can have a pervasive effect across of all of your life; preventing you from having the kind of life that you want.  OCD has two main features: obsessions and compulsions.NLP OCD Therapy

Obsessions are involuntary thoughts, images or impulses. Common obsessions can include, fears about dirt, germs and contamination; inordinate concern with order, arrangement or symmetry; collecting useless or worn out possessions; and fears that things like household appliances are not safe. The main features of obsessions are that they are automatic, frequent, upsetting, distressing, and difficult to control.

Common compulsions can include excessive washing and cleaning; checking; repetitive actions such as touching, counting, arranging and ordering; hoarding; ritualistic behaviours that lessen the chances of provoking an obsession (eg, putting all sharp objects out of sight); and acts which reduce those fears (eg, wearing only certain colours).  Compulsions can be observable actions, for example washing, but they can also be mental rituals such as repeating words or phrases, counting, or saying a prayer. The main features of compulsions are they are repetitive and stereotyped actions that the person feels forced to perform. People can have compulsions without having obsession thoughts but, very often, these two occur together.  Carrying out a compulsion reduces the person’s anxiety and makes the urge to perform the compulsion again.

Why use NLP to deal with OCD

The cause of OCD is much debated but it is likely to result from a combination of factors and the causes for one person may be differ from one person to the next.  OCD can run in families and, in some cases, may be associated with an underlying biochemical imbalance in the brain. Psychological factors such as susceptibility to stress or exposure to an emotionally traumatic experience are also likely to be the cause.   NLP is a talk therapy based approach that helps deal with past trauma; negative emotions; internal conflict; limiting beliefs and can help remove unwanted behaviours.  To the extent that your OCD has been created through a combination of these problems then NLP, Time Line Therapy™ and Hypnosis can help.

What can I expect?

Our approach works on the basis that everyone is different.  Everyone has been on their own unique journey through life and though we may often have problems that present in similar ways the causes can be different.   So the approach is unique and personal.  From the clients perspective the process is very simple; you need to be honest with yourself and your therapist and as far as you are able to follow instructions.  Typically a first session of two to three hours will be conducted, the purpose of which is to uncover how you do your particular problem.  This session will explore your past life and current situation and problems.  From this a plan as to what therapeutic interventions are required will be determined.  This is a process of understanding the present in the context of past so that unwanted patterns or behaviours can be let go or changed.  As a general guide from start to finish you should expect therapy to last for six to nine hours in total.
