Re-wire Your Thinking
We are approaching the end of the first quarter for 2010. So how’s that working out for you? Are your New Years’ resolutions being stuck to? Are your goals on track? Wherever you are right now, and no matter how things are going, consider this - if you want to get more of what you want in life and less of what you don’t want then look inside yourself, that is where you will find what you seek.
Resting comfortably between your ears is the planets most sophisticated learning device. Millions of years of evolution has produced this vast neural network which operates by learning and in the process of so doing it re-wires itself, so that old patterns can be un-learned and new pathways laid down. When you know how, achieving your goals is like riding a bike.
In 1890 in Principles of Psychology William James introduced the concept of Neoroplasticity, also referred to as brain plasticity, cortical plasticity or cortical re-mapping. This is more simply the changing of neurons, the organization of their networks, and their function via training and or new experiences. The brain is the organ that is designed to change in response to experience. Neuroscience and psychological research over the past decade on this topic has grown and is leading to new insights about the many ways in which the brain and ultimately behaviour changes in response to experience.
This basic issue is being studied at many different levels, in different species, and on different time scales. Yet all of the work invariably leads to the conclusion that the brain is not static but rather is dynamically, undergoing changes throughout one’s entire life. What I think is really exciting about humanity is that we are now at the stage where we can tap into the potential of our unconscious minds, consciously. By doing so we can create for ourselves and others the sort of life that we want. You will have heard it quoted before that we only use 10% of the capacity of our brains.
Humanity has huge potential locked up inside and now is the time for us all to unlock some more of it and NLP can give you that key.
What NLP offers is a tool kit to help you to re-programme your thinking, by creating real change in your neurology. It works at a deeper level than the many forms of therapeutic approaches and is the power behind effective coaching.
NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) starts with an understanding that everything that you experience right now is being experienced by you through your neurology. The pictures that you see, the sounds that you hear, your feelings, tastes and smells. In fact as soon as you use your words to start describing what you are experiencing, what you say is not actually your experience. It is your description of your experience moments ago.
As Alfred Korzybski said “The map is not the territory”. What that means is that we are all constantly interacting with each other and using a description of what is going on with us, our own map, that someone else interprets through their map. On top of that we all have a tendency to delete, distort and generalise what we experience. No wonder life can get so complex.
Using the tools and techniques of NLP you are able to drill down from your map into the actual territory of your experience and make appropriate changes. It is the keyhole surgery of personal development.
NLP training gives you the tools to have a better understanding of yourself and of others. It allows you to recognise the choices in your life and re-programme your neurology to overcome any blockages and let go of what you want from the past. Not only that you can then use these skills to help others to do the same. Life is a journey, it has many ups and downs, twists and turns, your NLP toolkit enhances resilience, re-charges your curiosity and lightens the load. Follow the white rabbit, take a step and let’s find out just how far the tunnel goes.
